Biomass and Alternative methane fuels are an underutilized energy resource. Biomass fuels include dedicated energy crops and trees, agricultural food and feed crop residues, aquatic plants, wood and wood residues, animal wastes, and other waste materials. Alternate methane fuels include landfill methane, wastewater treatment digester gas and coalbed methane. These fuels are often overlooked in favor of more familiar fossil fuels. Their use, however, is often more economical than fossil fuels while offering significant environmental advantages. The technology is actually well developed for utilization of many of these fuels but often their location and attributes are unknown to potential users including Federal energy managers.
