Over the past several years, steam systems have suffered a general decline due to loss of expertise, reduced funding, and reduced manpower. Yet, steam systems still comprise over 60% of the energy dollar spent for federal facilities and still constitute a major energy expenditure. The old ways of steam trap maintenance using periodic surveys and "find and fix" repair protocols are no longer viable because facilities no longer have the manpower to commit to steam. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) has undertaken a comprehensive solution to the steam issue by installing a system wide steam trap monitoring system. This wireless system, called SteamEye, employs a new acoustic technology to "listen" for the "whistle" of an internally blowing trap to address this complex problem. The presentation at GovEnergy would build on the initiatives undertaken by the BPA Energy Managers, identify similar initiatives at Navy, Army, and Air Force sites, and other Federal agencies. Steam system monitoring offers a reliable way of capturing energy savings.

Worlds are colliding—in lighting, that is. How can federal buyers make the right lighting choices for the future, particularly with the transition to higher-efficiency bulbs beginning in 2012, as directed by the Energy Independence and Security Act? How can they sort the good from the so-so among the new LED products rapidly emerging from the world of semiconductor technology? The potential for energy savings with solid-state lighting is significant and offers exciting design opportunities for architects and builders. Yet, as with any new technology, the risk of purchasing missteps is significant as well. The challenge is to sift through sometimes exaggerated performance claims, comparing apples to oranges to decide among the wide range of products on the market. This workshop, taught by a vendor-neutral expert from DOE's Solid-State Lighting Program, will introduce LED lighting basics and help separate fact from fiction, providing an understanding of how and where LED lighting can help reduce energy usage, with a specific focus on LED lighting in existing buildings.

Managing energy better is high on the list of everyone who manages, owns, or uses buildings and a federal mandate. The concerns are always the same: How can I use less energy? How can I reduce my operating costs without losing productivity or affecting my tenants' comfort? Where am I wasting energy? In the buildings industry, using more energy doesn't make you more productive or more competitive. It doesn't even necessarily keep tenants happier. Mostly, energy is about money — and wasting energy is wasting money.
This session will introduce a building energy management solution that provides the simplicity, ease-of-use, rapid deployment, low installation costs, and accountability you need to achieve energy savings and conform to existing and emerging federal regulations.
