PRESENTERS:

  • Jim Snook
  • Mike Warwick

TRACK: Energy 501

SESSION INTENT: Discover how to address the most complex issues in on-site renewable project execution and how to prepare for them.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: What could possibly go wrong with an on-site renewable energy project? This session will present some of the complexities related to developing a successful renewable energy project. Discussion topics include issues such as land use agreements, termination schedules, ownership assignments, performance guarantees, National Environmental Policy Act reviews and long-term contracting authority.

SESSION TITLE: Mitigating Energy Security Risks at Your Installation

PRESENTERS:

  • Bob DeVault
  • Keith McAllister

TRACK: Energy 501

SESSION INTENT: Learn about the latest developments in energy security and how they impact your facilities and installation.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Even without a worldwide shortage of fossil fuel resources, large installations are expected to experience logistical burdens, operational constraints, and vulnerabilities to fuel supply lines. Discover what new, long-term installation plans will entail, such as networked local power delivery and storage control systems centered on the micro-grid, power delivery innovations, and smart facility energy efficiency interfaces with local and utility-provided power.

6

SESSION TIME & LOCATION: Tuesday,
August 9, 2011
2:00 PM -
3:30 PM

Room: 200

SESSION TITLE: Interconnection Control Issues for Connecting Large Scale Utility Systems to the Grid

PRESENTERS:

  • Melanie Miller
  • Justin Taylor

TRACK: Energy 501

SESSION INTENT: Gain in-depth insight into utility renewable system planning, construction, and operations and maintenance. Topics include typical stakeholder and facility design, performance and interconnectivity challenges, overcoming design and interconnection challenges and solutions, and lessons learned.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Historically, photovoltaic (PV) systems have been dispersed throughout the grid. Disturbances caused by PV systems dropping off-line due to voltage fluctuations on the grid, or suddenly reducing their output due to a passing cloud, were minor relative to total grid capacity. As large, utility-scale PV systems increase, these disturbances threaten grid stability on a wider scale. Learn how future inverters will require functionality that enables low-voltage ride through, voltage support, and communications and control capabilities.

SESSION TITLE: How Metering Data Impacts Human Behavior

PRESENTERS:

  • Bernie Lindsey
  • Fred Speece

TRACK: Energy 501

SESSION INTENT: Discuss how metering data impacts human behavior and consider initial sets of metering data from our facilities.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: Advanced metering offers opportunities to collect vast amounts of data on energy consumption patterns. Discover how that data can be used to improve energy-related behavior and incorporate energy considerations into strategic and operational decision-making that is constantly evolving.

SESSION TITLE: Advanced Alternative Financing

PRESENTERS:

  • Peter Flynn
  • Will Irby

TRACK: Energy 501

SESSION INTENT: Explore the possibilities and discover the complexities of alternative financing projects—an immediate need, due to dwindling federal funds.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: With decreasing funding for government agencies, alternative financing opportunities are a viable option to fulfill significant funding shortfalls. Alternative funding traditionally includes energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs), utility energy service contracts (UESCs), and enhanced use lease (EUL) contracting mechanisms. For many years, government agencies have benefited from these contracts. Yet, these contracts are complicated and carry risks for both government agencies and contractors who provide the required results. To be successful, both government and contractors must work together
